Tragedy Strikes: Baltimore Block Party Mass Shooting Leaves Two Dead, Dozens Injured
On Sunday, July 2, 2023, a mass shooting occurred at a block party in Baltimore, leaving two people dead and 28 others injured. The shooting took place in the 800 block of Gretna Avenue in southern Baltimore. An 18-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man were killed in the shooting. Nine people were transported to area hospitals, and three of the injured are in critical condition. The remaining 19 victims took themselves to hospitals. Several children were among the injured.
The Baltimore Police Department received multiple calls after 12:30 a.m. and arrived to find one woman dead and another nine people suffering from gunshot wounds. Police are currently looking for those responsible and their motive. Detectives are combing through what they called "an extensive crime scene". The acting police commissioner, Richard Worley, was at the scene of the shooting.
Mayor Brandon Scott called the shooting "a reckless, cowardly act" that "did not have to happen". He also said, "This morning, all of Baltimore is grieving for the lives that we lost here". The shooting has left the city in mourning and has once again brought attention to the issue of gun violence in the United States.
The incident is still under investigation, and more details are expected to emerge in the coming days.
